What is a good hotel on the beach in Karon that is also close enough to walk to shops and restaurants. We want to be in a nice tropical bungalow style hotel on the beach. Karon looks a nice beach from the photos.

There are no hotels right on the beach that are tropical style bungalows. the only hotel really on the beach is the Karon Beach resort which is a large modern beach hotel. nearby Marina Cottages might suit you.
Look also at Centara Villas at the north end of Karon, now they are very much tropical style, there is a walkway down to the beach, that is the closest to what you are looking for. However, you will need a tuk tuk into either Karon or much busier Patong.

I have read many of the other threads and have realised now that finding a hotel where you can step straight onto the beach is not going to be so easy. Thanks for the advise. I will considor the Karon Beach Resort but it is not the style we were hoping for.

The Centara Villas though look like they could be what we are looking for.

Probably your best choice unless you wanted the Karong Beach Resort

In hindsight we should have gone for Karon Beach Resort or Mom Tri's in Kata, much nicer areas than Patong

Plenty of very good low season hotel offers now in Phuket, lots of real bargains

Also try for Phuket - Hotels in Karon Phuket and that includes not just Patong but all the other beaches and other parts of Phuket including hotels, resorts, holiday self catering apartments, pool villas, local prices / cheap deals, and reviews
