It is very easy to get from Bangkok Airport to Pattaya, Jomtien beach, Cha Am and Hua Hin by taxi.
From Bangkok city also express buses, and in the case of Hua Hin and Cha Am area also by train.

Pattaya is you want busy, crowded, lots of shopping and lively,
Hua Hin area if you want fairly busy but also relaxed and much better beaches plus nature national parks, temples, history, more Thai style.

By taxi:

Pattaya: 90 mins
Jomtien Beach: extra 10 mins

Cha Am: 2 hrs
Hua Hin: 2 hrs 20-30 on average

Buses take about 30 minutes longer

Train to Hua Hin varies from 3 hrs to 4 hrs 15 depending on the train

Hua Hin is also good for a nice beach close to Bangkok, very easy by taxi, bus or train. Nice place !

Seeing so many good things recently on Hua Hin, I think perhaps people are tiring of some of the more commercial type resort areas.
