If you are looking for a budget hotel be sure you do not find yourslef staying some place that costs you more to get to and from the sights of Milan than staying somewhere with a good location in the first place. It could be a false economy. I would look for some place that is located for where you want to visit in Milan and save youself transport costs for taxis or buses or whatever.

Would May still be the low season for hotel rates in Milan.

I think May is Spring time and the rates more than winter time but perhaps less than summer time. I am not certain of this.

I would guess in most of Italy hotel rates would be lower in May than summer months but Milan could be different as it is a business destination also, but that may not apply to budget hotels, you need to compare rates and see what deals are on offer.

There seem to be plenty of bargains around the world for travel this year but I am just not seeing them for Europe, with exchange rate Europe is still expensive. I had hoped to see more places in Europe offering promotions like it seems almost everywqhere else is doing this year.

The hotel rates now for Fall and Autumn are cheaper and it's a good tme to find travel bargains in October

Good advice, though you can find cheap and budget hotels in Milan that area close to transport also.

We are making our plans for end of April and the start of May so I hope it is not yet the expensive time for hotels in Milan, we do not want to go to a small budget hotel unless it is very nice, but I am worried the good hotels in Milan will be too expensive.
