Hey all,
Some of you may or may not remember me or my old '75 turbo Z which I sold back in July of last year.
Miss that car, but couldn't stand to let it sit out in rainy weather and rust.
This past December, I found out that I was moving to Japan this coming November, so my NSX aspirations were put on hold after I had found the most perfect 1992 Comptech supercharged black on ivory NSX up in New Hampshire (telling that guy I couldn't buy his car almost literally hurt). My last NSX for kicks:
Miss that car dearly as well, more than the Z.
I've been in a sportscar void for about a year now after getting sensible and buying a decent 2002 Accord to DD back and forth to base. Thought about getting an S2000 to have fun before I left for Japan, but then I starting thinking about cars that I could have fun with and possibly take to Japan.
So I've been casually looking through old Datsun Z and Porsche 911 classifieds. Came close on one 911 down in Georgia, but the owner couldn't get me the info I needed (apparently older Porsches before the 1980's VINs did not have a month of manufacture stamped on the body...very important for Japan). Ended up stumbling across an ad in Ohio for a 240Z advertised as "one owner". I inquired.
What I found was a Series 1 in fantastic condition. This lady bought the car brand new in 1970 having just come off the boat. After some time, she drove the car less and less and let a good family friend take care of the car for her, the person I originally contacted. It has 59K original miles, and the rust-problem was widespread enough by this time (July 1970) that the dealer took the car to a local shop to completely rust proof the bottom as brand new, and it looks like it.
I present to you 1970 Datsun 240Z Series 1 #7356, white on blue interior.
DAT DASH
If you know Zs, you know this is the most important place to tell what kind of shape the chassis is in. Looks brand. spankin. new. Floorpan.
UBER UBER RARE
The only drawbacks I see is that the car shows some evidence of sitting. The bottom has some surface rust on the suspension components as well as some dry rotted bushings. It was just not driven all that often (maybe once a month). Doing all the fluids and replacing the bushings.
It's almost entirely original down to the Datsun "D" hubcaps and steel wheels. It has had the carpet redone in the back and now covering the strut towers (should be exposed blue vinyl) and there's carpet covering the blue vinyl down the transmission tunnel under the console. Probably going to fix this.
More updates to come. Thanks for reading my diatribe. _________________ 1999 Nissan Silvia Spec R Aero. Black Obsidian.

Looks amazing. That's the most 70s-looking interior I've seen in quite a while. _________________ Calendar of local-ish events

Wait....you didn't like the minty one because you were afraid to let it sit out, so you got another minty one?
Looks immaculate. Going FI again on this one? |

Balls! That looks mintier than the last one. It's so..... stock. I'd be afraid to mess with it.
Couldn't you have gotten like an old Miata or E30 to boost and slide around? I mean, it's so original... _________________

Yeah I understand the concern. I'm also afraid of doin anything to this car, so the most it will ever see is maybe some other wheels, some period-correct 5 slot mags. There's some RS Watanabes for sale in Nashville, but they don't look so great, and I think the Japanese would be more interested in an American styled Z.
It's staying OEM. Im even keeping the OEM steel wheels with the hubcaps. _________________ 1999 Nissan Silvia Spec R Aero. Black Obsidian.

Yeah, that thing is immaculate. That's what's called an appreciating asset right there.
If you keep it clean and original for a few years you might be able to trade it straight-up to get back into an NSX, lol. _________________

Yeah that's sitting in the back of my mind also.
Over there, I could probably make a chunk on it but it would also be balanced out by the fact that Japanese NSXs are also more expensive.
Could also keep it here and sell for a good part of an NSX fairly soonish like you were mentioning, but I may get too attached to it to even export it, so selling it for another NSX at home would be out of the question.
Every new car is both a joy and a trial haha. _________________ 1999 Nissan Silvia Spec R Aero. Black Obsidian.

Went up to Ohio with my parents and their truck on Friday to check it out/pay the rest of the purchase price.
Man she's a beaut. Sorry for the phone pics.
Got a UHaul trailer and towed it back to Wright Pat AFB for the night.
The next day, while we were there, we decided to go to the National Museum of the US Air Force, my parents' first time visiting, my second time. Spent 4 hours there and saw probably 60% of what was there.
Then we saddled up and started the drive back to TN. Overkill?
Back at home.
She's not without her faults, but she's pretty cherry. Starts right up, carbs in synch, no sputters. Drive's great, albeit with a little steering slop.
And I gotta say...
I don't think I can take it to Japan. I just can't do it. It's gotta stay here.
More on that later. _________________ 1999 Nissan Silvia Spec R Aero. Black Obsidian.

Yeah, I'd feel bad driving that without also wearing some rayon and a pair of aviators. Period-correct FTW. _________________

I had the repros on all my previous Zs because I like them too, but I'm not going to do it to this one. The actual ones were glass with the chrome bezels for the G nose cars.

Yeah she's a beaut. I've already done all the paperwork required to have it shipped over to Japan and sourced all the parts needed to make it legal over there.
I just can't do it. I literally bought this car from the person who walked into the Datsun dealer and bought it new. It has some nicks and paint chips here and there, and some bushings need attention, but by and large the car is pretty much the most well preserved Z I've ever seen with one of the rarest, if not the rarest, color combination they made.
To find a 240Z with the original hubcaps and steel wheels on it is insane.
So the factors influencing my decision are valid, at least in my mind:
- The car's a time machine. An American time machine. The Japanese would probably appreciate this car, but I don't want to hack up the taillights and speedometer just to get it by legalization. I also don't think I would feel good dumping it just to get another car (my plan was an NSX). I can always get another NSX, both US and J spec. This car won't come around again.
- The car wouldn't be, in all due respects, properly insured in Japan for what it should be, on a classic/collector car policy. My plan is to leave it at my parents' place in TN (they're not going anywhere...ever) garaged so that I can get it on an agreed value policy. It would stay there until I came back (it's a waste to own something you can't drive...I know). This would give both me and my family peace of mind about actually taking it out to shows/classic car meets without worry of something happening to it without being properly covered.
- This would give me time and room to find out how registering, buying, and trading cars works in Japan and my prefecture without the undo hassle of finding out by getting thrown into it.
- I want it. I've always wanted a first year 240Z. I will eventually find myself in another highly modified S30 Z, but not this car. Probably a 1973.
So right now, I will be going over there in the same state that most people do...without a car...which isn't a big deal. I'm kicking myself now saying that I should have just pulled the trigger on an NSX to keep home if I knew I wasn't going to take a car to Japan, but I would have had to finance it and going to Japan with a car note doesn't sound very fun.
This doesn't mean that I will be leaving Japan the same way. Work will have me busy and traveling often, but I may be on the lookout for an R32 GTR or possibly a GC10 Skyline 2000GT (Hakosuka), but I think the 240Z will be enough old car for me until a 911.

Thanks! You should have seen the grainy craigslist ad. I'm glad I inquired.

I should look like the man from the Datsun black gold commercial. Also, the woman I bought the car from kept alot of old parts magazines and gave them to me. There's an ad in there for "quality German sunglasses" that looks just like him (probably is). I should scan it and throw it up here.
