I guess the older mr2's are a good example, but I thought they weighed in closer to 2500lbs?

The NA MK2 MR2s were ~2500, the Turbos are porkers @ ~2900 optioned-out. NAs just only had ~130 hp or so.

A 370 basically has 10lbs per 1 bhp

I see no reason why aftermarket mods couldn't put the the BRZ to 270bhp

Just remember how fun a 230bhp miata or 270bhp e30 is to drive! Very Happy

Fun no doubt but you are also now talking about a 30k to 35k vehicle with way less reliability and no warranty on a brand new car. Choosing that gameplan on a past warranty Miata sounds like a much better return. I just don't see how you are going to make 70 hp and keep it NA. I suspect its fairly tuned out already thus FI will be the only road to big power or Eric's comment comes to mind Cool. Of course none of us have ever been in one but 6 flat is a lot different feel than 6.8

You could have a 230bhp miata or 270bhp e30 for under $10k and still be reliable, but that's another discussion all together.

I think with the 12.5:1 CR & DI that a small turbo could easily push the car to the 300bhp mark without a hiccup. Obviously would need to be re-tuned with different injectors, different intake, manifold and down-pipe, that's also "eco" friendly.

I bet its open deck. If so, I don't see this engine being aftermarket turbo friendly at all. They'll come out with a semi-closed deck, lower compression 300 somehting horsepower turbo version fairly soon. The first run cars will just be something to shut up all the fan boi's while the real version gets worked on.

You know more about it than I do. I'm just learning the whole FI thing as I go along but that 12:1 was what I always was led to believe made FI such a small window of safety. No doubt it can be done but that's where I would think it would be expensive especially if its possible to drop a STi motor in but again I would think that means $$$.

Look forward to seeing what they do with it though.

Margin of error is smaller, but it's all heat dependant, as always. If you have cool enough intake temps, low boost(small turbo) + higher compression isn't as scarey. Plus the torque curve would be sexy.

It would make the most sense to lower the compression. Otherwise the after-market tendency would go from "making more power!" to"how long can I go until it knocks and I shoot a rod thru my block?!"

An STi version would be awesome, but probably $35k Sad

So I see you've read about the Mazdaspeed Protege.

Hmm... Have you all seen the specs of the 2013 Genesis Coupe? About 275HP for the turbo-4 and 350HP for the V6. RX-8 aside, it looks like it's still a good time to be a fan of cheap RWD cars.

The fact that the power wars are still continuing is the good part.

The Genesis Coupe needs the sedan's R motor. 428HP V8.
Why Hyundai hasn't done it yet is just baffling.

I've wondered this too; but after seeing the Genesis Sedan R, I wonder if they are going to come out with a low volume specialty coupe and call it yjr Genesis Coupe 5.0 Spec R.

I imagine they haven't maybe due to cost but hyundai is now legitimate enough on a sports car scene to put one out. It would clean the clock of the other JDM offering with exception of the GT-R and upcoming LFA which are vastly more money.

For what $30k?

Pass.

C5Z, C6, and hell by the time a BRZ STi comes to market (if it ever does), C6Z for $20k-$30k. All 3 run circles around it.

I still don't get this car. So as it sits now in NA form is this like a hardtop Miata for today's age?

That's what it seems like, to me. Or at least, Toyota/Subaru hope it to be. Based on what I've read the BRZ will be in the $20k-$25k pricepoint, and that's knocking on the door of a new WRX or a used WRX for sure, with some light modifications.

Or, look at it like this: $25k for turbo and AWD, coupled with 4 doors and the option of a hatch, versus $25k for a RWD boxer coupe. Either way, stilll kinda odd.
