After the 5th run of this last autocross, I finally put all of the pieces together with the MR2.

The incessantly hazy windshield, the inability to bleed the coolant system, the "mystery leak" that I'd catch a whif of whilst driving, but then never be able to find, and the cursed overheating at the track....it explains EVERYTHING.

I simply have a leak in the heater core. I can smell coolant inside the car when I get it really hot, but not outside the car. The windshield haze is from the vapor, such as it is, and is something that it's been doing for years now. The coolant bubbles that mysteriously develop at the track, etc.

"So, Richard, how is this bad? You now know what your problem is...good news right?"

Oh, you poor souls. I shall not inflict upon your eyes the atrocities committed by Toyota Engineers as they wrought this car from hellfire and brimstone in their UAC affiliate plant on Mars using instructions left in Rube Goldbergs will. Avert your gaze so that you might maintain your innocence.

No, seriously, the entire front half of the car is built around it. Replacing it is so complicated that the directions are not even in the shop manual. They are as follows:

Trouble Shooting:

Pressure Test heater core.

+ If pressure is maintained, move on to test two.

- If pressure falls, discard car...go buy another one.

*Do not attempt repair, too many have been lost already, it's not worth it.

Wow... That makes me laugh and cry at the same time. That reminds me of the (IIRC) the A/C condenser in older CRVs. $1k to fix on something that's worth about $5k.

"I love what you do for me, Toyota!"

If the remove/install instructions aren't in the FSM, then what would the dealer tell you if you went it to have it done...? And what are you going to do as a result...?

Book time on a spark plug change on the newer RAV4's is 17 hours. Why you ask? Procedure is to pull the motor out.

Nucking futs! If I wanted to pull a motor to change plugs, I'd get an R8. Rolling Eyes

This is why most Hondas are great.

Richard, I remember Deb talking about having to change the brake booster in her Jag E type.

The first step in the manual was: Remove Engine.

Yeah, it's just that with the MR2 it would be so easy to just put a damn access panel in the frunk or even under the car between the frunk & the tub.

I'm glad you put the word "most" in there. Having changed the front rotors on my dad's '97 Accord, I can say that not even Honda is immune to the occasional stupid engineering faux pas.

When we changed Battlewagon's motor to a JDM EJ25 from the USDM EJ22, we realized the only way to change the plugs is to remove the engine. The heads have about an inch and a half of clearance from the wheel wheels.

I blame copious amounts of sake for these silly engineering ideas.

You're lucky there's really only room for one person upside-down in the floor-board of that car Rolling Eyes Laughing

Besides, I'd really like it if all the electronics still worked when I put it back together... Wink

My stuff works fine thanks much Smile. At least you aren't still racing with your daily driver (tard) and having to come steal the mountaineer (which at the time was MY daily driver) from me... Wink . Plus your electronics don't work anyway Very Happy . Honestly though, if you need me to grab the truck and/or tools and head over anytime I'll be available....

The oil light and speedometer are the only things that don't work, and the speedometer is mechanical Razz

Front brakes on the Accord = suck. I second that. I really miss my 96 Accord, though. I'd give just about anything to have it back.
