Alright, so the compressor, fan, and everything seems to be working on the E30, but there's no freezy coming out the vents. It didn't take long to figure out that the direct R12 refrigerant is now fairly impossible to find. Does anyone else have an older car with A/C that actually works? What do you use to charge it? Googling leads me to believe that you can use R-414b products without having to replace the compressor or even any seals, direct replacement. I can find "Hot Shot" on ebay for about 20 bucks, and there's a company here in Alcoa that makes one called "RedTek" that I see people recommending. Anyone have an opinion?

You do know the update kits to use R134 are like ~$30 right? Or slightly less if the kit I recall tossing on a shelf in my garage is still there....

Then it's it's just an issue of flushing/refilling.

This thing didn't have A/C when we bought it PB, it's probably had this cancer before your car was born, hell maybe even before we were born Wink

And Wheelman, I know the conversions are quick and cheap, and it would have been so easy to do when I was doing the water pump/timing belt, etc. But apparently, according to Pelican anyway, the 87-88' 325i has a compressor that is somehow incompatible with R134a. Since buying a new one is out of the question financially, I'm looking for a quick alternative. Not to mention I'm not entirely sure everything about this A/C works, so I kinda just want to throw a can of something in there and see I can get cold air.

Well, there's always this:

A period-correct air-conditioned members-only jacket.
